Today's Pocahontas: It's Still 1492

It's rare that I make a social statement with my art beyond something tamer or of a spiritual bent but, I thought I would let it out here.

It is, indeed, still a 1492 mentality in this country. You doubt me? Then tell me ANY major differences in the motivation of the US occupying the Middle East and Columbus hitting the beach in the Caribbean.....not much different. Conquer, Conquest, Greed, Exploit, Assimilate and Disseminate.

The bloody War Paint across the cheek is subtle but most of my Indigenous Friends the world over will get it.

I wonder what Pocahontas might say about Her Land and Her People were she alive to see what has happened today...

"I wear the White Man's Clothes,
I eat the White Man's Toxic Food,
I drink the White Man's Poisonous Water,
I speak the White Man's Language,
I live in the White Man's House and
I become ill with the White Man's Sickness,
But I still know who I am..."

Tse'Bit'Ai: The Arrival of the Clans

This painting represents one of my most favorite places on Earth and all of the mysticism associated with it. We see Tse'Bit'Ai, the Rock With Wings according to the Dineh (Navajo) or as the rest of the world knows it, Shiprock. It lies near the Four Corners area of New Mexico near the town of the same name on the Navajo Reservation. We are looking at the Creator Spirit, Talking God being flanked by First Man and First Woman and two Y'ei Spirits as they lead Tse'Bit'Ai to it's final resting place on the Northeastern portion of Dinetah (Navajoland) or Dinebikeyah. According to Navajo metaphysics, the first Clans of "The People" arrived on this mighty rock onto their now sacred lands and from there were taught and practiced The Beauty Way so that they could live in balance and harmony with creation and to adapt and endure whatever came their way; to live in Hozho...

Back in the late 80's and early 90's, when my mother, still living, was making the pages of American Artist and Southwest Art magazines with her own art, I would peruse those pages with reckless abandon as soon as a new issue arrived. I wasn't necessarily excited about seeing my mom's art in them but instead was fascinated by the artwork of then top Navajo Painters such as Tony Abeyta, David K. John and Baje Whitethorn, Sr.. Their work was mesmerizing to me as it always had an ethereal and mystical quality to it where things didn't quite look 100% physical or tangible were it standing before me. Later, when I lived near the Rez in the Flagstaff area of Arizona, I would spelunk the galleries of Flagstaff and Sedona and actually get to see the paintings of these Fine Indigenous Artists in person and let me tell you, I was just gobsmacked at how beautiful and vibrant they were! So this piece is a tribute and salute to all of that in the form of appreciation, respect and just plain admiration of the beauty and mystery I witnessed. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did creating it.

Walk In Beauty,

Going back to my Southwest Art Roots...

You may have noticed some major changes as of late. Big Ones. What you are seeing is me going back to being a Fine Artist specializing in Southwest Art and leaving behind the world of Illustration. I honestly put blood, sweat and tears into every illustrative piece of work I did, each time hoping beyond all hope that the next one would be my "lucky break" piece that got the attention........and a nice contract. I had experienced a decent amount of success about 3 years ago with my Southwest Art and I thought, naively, that maybe if I tried some illustration that those pieces could coat tail a bit on my Fine Art success.......this, of course, did not happen at all.

Having put myself through needless suffering, tons of time and many, many lessons learned, I bringing my heart and talent back home where it belongs. The above pieces reflect this return and with the return comes a new and looser style full of heart, passion and deep mystical feeling that comes to me in flooding waves when I think of the American Southwest, it's diverse Cultures, the haunting landscapes that extend from horizon to horizon and the smells and sounds of food and music that are truly unique to the Four Corners States of the US.

Here I will remain....Here I will stay.

My Art as well as my Heart..........are now home.

Enjoy the Journey with me.

This is the first in a series of Hajime Sorayama inspired Pinups that I've begun. I've combed the internet thoroughly and although I could find plenty of chrome and latex, I could not find any Lovely Maidens made of glass.

So, hopefully she is to your liking as you are truly seeing the first rendered, Glass Diva.

New Series!

I've been stacking up reference photos galore for a new series and I'm ready to start number one.
The New Pin-Up Series will be called, "Glass Divas" the style of Hajime Sorayama...

With any luck and domesticity remaining relatively calm, I will have the first Goddess penciled in today.

My aim is to bring a little sensuality done classily back to my work and use it to bring a broader clientele to my patreon page

Bowie Resurrection: Loving The Alien

Well, I know I took a while to get this done but I'm glad I did. I started this a week and a half after Bowie's passing. It really hurt me and bothered me as he represented pure, unfettered art that was bold, limitless and wonderful to witness. During that week and half period as I mulled over what to do artistically as a tribute, I saw many, many portraits of him rendered in as many styles. I wondered if I should just do that, and as I think about it, it might have sufficed. But Bowie was so much more to me; talented, cryptic, metaphysical, spiritual, socially forward and trend setting. I had to do something of that caliber or at least try. So I began to sketch out ideas all the while letting randomness and intuition as well as muse and my love for this Being guide me. The result of all of that is what you see now.

I wanted to create something filled with as much symbology as I could muster as well as reference his own work and past identities. I even brought UFOlogy, Conspiracy and the Paranormal into it. I mean, after all, HE was Ziggy Stardust as well as The Man Who Fell to Earth!

So what you are seeing is a sort of ritual taking place. A "Man in Black" Bowie that is also a mere Ghost is overseeing the Blue Nagel Suited Bowie who is in transition as is apparent with his Ethereal looking hand. His hand sits upon the Blackstar Bible as if it holds some sort of secrets, enchantments, spells of the Afterlife and it is as if all of that is passing from his ghostly hand through to his still living hand into the body of his newly cloned effigy as being revealed to him by the Alien Grey unmasking the "New Ziggy". In the background is, of course, Mars, Major Tom's capsule and all of the lovely stars that make Bowie the Starman. The lighted tunnel opens up in the bottom middle third of the piece as if inviting the Vintage Bowie to take the next step of his journey while at the same time leaving his living legacy behind. And finally, a Glass Spider, representing not only Ziggy's band but also the name of a Tour he ventured on during the 80's, steps lightly across the Blackstar Bible thus completing the circle.

I know I put so many WIP's of this out there and I am truly sorry for that. The more I painted, the more I realized just how involved this piece was to do and it had to be as close to perfect as my ability could produce.

Thank you all for tolerating this binge and purge of muse and for also watching me experience catharsis on Facebook. You are too kind.

I have almost 1300 Fans following me on Facebook with similar numbers throughout the nets on sites like Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, DeviantArt, ArtPal, Redbubble and a large number of hits on my own website.

Do you all realize that out of that large number, if only 150 of you a month purchased a print or if only 4 or 5 of you purchased a piece of Original Art or Commissioned me, I could do this indefinitely? You want to see me at a few Cons signing and selling some of these in person? Triple that number.

Don't just cruise through my posts and sites "liking" what I do. If you like a piece, purchase the original or if you cannot afford that, purchase a very affordable print. If you still cannot do that, go away. I am not a free show at that point (Here's an idea, if you can't afford my cheap prices, and they are very cheap, at least have the courtesy to share my posts with others that might or share it anyway). I do plenty for all of you for free. Do you not realize that when I am posting WIP's that I am also teaching you Tips and Techniques with a step by step window of instruction into what I am doing?

If you want to keep me doing this, and see more, well then I a have a ton of art uploaded and available in every way possible on at least a dozen sites in almost every single genre!

Fine Art. Fan Art. Sci-fi Art. Fantasy Art. Pin Up Art. Horror Art. Southwest/Native American Inspired Art. Wildlife Art. It's all there and in large quantities! You want to see something different? Commission me!!

Please, show me a little support because I give so much to all of you.

You can find everything on my website.

Thanks for understanding,
